My spiritual journey
As you choose a counselor, I believe it’s important that you understand my core beliefs about life, health, spirituality, and what helps us grow.
I am a Christian who has experienced a major transformation as a result of my faith.
In my early 20s, after having made a mess of my life pursuing “sex, drugs, and rock and roll,” I bottomed out. I felt very hopeless about making anything of myself; and if things got much worse, I took comfort that I could always take my own life.
During this time of desperation, I met Jesus, not face-to-face, but in a very life-changing way. I went from loving things and using people to loving people and using things. I experienced peace, joy, and contentment in a way that I had never imagined.
My purpose became clear. I wanted to develop my gifts and talents to help people discover the glory of knowing who they are.
My beliefs based on my learning
God was intimately involved in our creation. As it says in Psalm 139:13, “For you (God) created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Knitting is a very intimate process, one in which the knitter touches every strand of His creation and has a specific purpose in mind for what He is creating.
God’s motivation to relate to us is His great love. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
I don’t believe that God wants to beat me up and punish me. Rather, God wants to teach me how to freely walk in the life He has designed for me.
God continues to be very involved in our lives. As Philippians 1:6 says, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Whatever I am facing today, whether it is sunshine or injustice, I can seek out what good purpose God intends for me through this circumstance.
Counseling focusing on you
You don’t have to share my faith. In fact, many of my clients don’t.
Unless you find that helpful, we won’t be talking a lot about the Bible.
It is important that you know, however, that I believe you are created in the image of a creative, loving God. You have a purpose; and you are loved, valuable, and worthy of being treated with dignity.
In short, I believe we are created with more glory than we can imagine. We don’t create it ourselves; it already is created. We can’t destroy it, but we can pretend it doesn’t exist.
Generally, we can discover, reveal, and learn to live according to who we really are. Alternatively, we can hide, wear masks, and play games to maintain shallow relationships that feel safe enough but provide no real warmth or depth.
Guess which one I want us to choose?
